Why Wi-Fi Routers Use RP-SMA Instead of Standard SMA
Reverse-polarity SMA swaps center pin and socket to prevent accidental mating with standard SMA. We explain the polarity reversal and antenna-matching notes.
Most Wi-Fi routers with detachable external antennas use RP-SMA (reverse-polarity SMA). It looks almost identical to standard SMA, but the center conductor gender is swapped. The purpose is regulatory and practical: prevent consumers from connecting standard antennas to certified radio modules.

2. Why the swap?
Regulatory bodies such as the FCC require that antennas sold with radio modules be tested as a system. By using RP-SMA, manufacturers make it mechanically difficult to attach a non-certified antenna to a certified module. It is not a performance difference; it is a compliance and compatibility control.
3. Can RP-SMA mate with standard SMA?
No. The threads are the same, so the connectors can be threaded together, but the center conductors do not make proper contact. A standard SMA male has a pin; an RP-SMA female has a pin. Forcing them together can damage both contacts. The same applies to standard female and RP-SMA male.
4. Antenna matching
Wi-Fi antennas are usually 50 Ω and designed for 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz. Even with the correct RP-SMA connector, verify:
- Frequency band match (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or dual-band);
- VSWR under 2.0 in the operating band;
- Gain pattern suitable for the enclosure orientation.
Bottom line: RP-SMA is standard SMA with reversed center-conductor gender. It exists to keep antennas paired with certified radios. Always match RP-SMA to RP-SMA and standard SMA to standard SMA.
